Past Performances

Friday 27th October, 11am-1pm | Dido’s Lament: From Purcell to Berlioz, Opera Prelude Lecture Recital.

with Georgia Mae Bishop, mezzo soprano and Brendan Musk, piano

Myths and legends have long inspired some of the greatest operatic works, and so too have great love stories. In Virgil’s epic the Aeneid, Aeneas meets Dido, Queen of Carthage, and their tragic tale inspired both Purcell’s most loved and performed opera Dido and Aeneas and Berlioz’s five act Grand Opera Les Troyens. Despite the story being about Aeneas and his heroic journey to Italy, it is the enigmatic Dido who has the most memorable and exquisite musical writing including Purcell’s Dido’s Lament and Berlioz’s Adieu fière cité!
